To Sling or Not to Sling

To Sling or Not to Sling

I hear the question asked all the time: Should I get a vest, chest pack, fanny pack, backpack, sling, or just a pair of jeans with really big pockets? OK, all but the last one are reasonably possible options!

But how do you know which one is right? The key you have to ask yourself is, which one is right for YOU. I used to have a vest, but I often found myself taking a regular backpacking daypack when I went on longer hikes up a stream because I would have a few larger items that didn't fit in the vest pockets. I eventually got the Simms Headwaters sling and it just suits me!

I like the fact that I can take some larger items and it stays on my back like a backpack but without the bulk. It works for the way I fish. I do tend to throw extra crap in there to the point it can start to look like an old ladies purse, but I am at least prepared!! I still have a couple smaller packs that I take for short and specific trips (like the Fishpond San Juan) - but I usually just grab the sling because I know everything I need is probably already in there!

Bottom line? Sling? No Sling? You have to decide, but I would suggest you try one and see if it feels right when you fish, you might be surprised!
